A diamond engagement ring ignites a fiery passion through its elegant sparkle. Diamond rings are a commitment to love and excellence. Diamond jewelry is revered for a number of its unique properties: Beauty - Diamond rings embrace a colorless brilliance that dances with white light. Enchanting and seductive, this precious gem has been prized for centuries. Like snowflakes, every diamond is unique. Hardness - Diamonds are the hardest substance known to man and highly resistant to scratching, abrasion and denting. When properly cared for, a diamond ring will last a lifetime. Value - For its beauty, endurance and rarity, diamond has long been regarded as a lasting treasure. There are four criteria, known as the four C's, by which the value of a diamond is measured: Carat Weight - The carat is a unit of weight used to measure diamonds. One carat equals 200 milligrams and 142 carats equal one ounce. The stone can also be expressed in points, with 100 points to the carat (e.g. 75-point diamond = 3/4 carats = 150mg). Color - Though rare diamonds of exotic colors such as red, green and blue do exist, most range from clear to yellow. The most coveted diamond rings feature the truly colorless stones, also known as white diamonds. Diamonds are graded by how far they deviate from pure white: Clarity - Clarity refers to the internal purity of a diamond. Natural imperfections are dubbed inclusions. There are eleven official clarity grades (from flawless to imperfections visible with the naked eye), assigned by the number and severity of inclusions that can be seen under 10X magnification: Cut - The exact physical proportions and finish of a diamond can have a dramatic effect on the amount of light that reflects back to the viewer. This brilliance is an important trait in diamond jewelry, and so the precision of the cut is critical. There are many popular shapes for diamonds, including the classic 58-facet round brilliant, emerald, pear, princess, square and marquis cuts.
